The aborted

Their lives are not ‘nothing’

The following comes from a June 26 column by Father James Schall, S.J. on The Catholic Thing website.

How does one think of the actually aborted? They are not abstractions, however tiny. They constitute a significant proportion of all human beings called into existence. We have no monuments or graves to commemorate their being here. Their bodies are said to have “commercial” use or can be used to “aid” others to improve their lives. So they are not “nothing.” Their elimination must be “justified.”

Each human being begins at conception and lasts until that initial life force ends in death, say, four score and ten years later if not sooner – for the aborted, much sooner. Many human lives never reach birth for reasons of sickness, accidents, or malformation. We call them “mis-carriages.” The immediate cause of their death was not willed human intervention.

Karl Rahner once wrote: “‘To be born’ means to come into existence without being asked.” An abortion terminates a begun human life by human agency. The aborted or its agency is again not asked or considered. Murder is the unjust destruction of an already born human being at the hands of another, again without the victim’s being asked. The aborted have the act ending their life “done unto them.”

We are not “asked” whether we want to be born or not. That is a great thing, really. Existence and even the desire to exist are in fact not in our hands. They are gifts. What is in our hands is the life of what is begotten of human parents, male and female.

So what is the “status” of those unborn members of the human race that are in fact killed by other human beings whose ostensible responsibility is to protect them and bring them to birth and maturity?

Estimates vary but we are told that, worldwide, some 42 million are aborted each year. This figure is probably a minimum and has been repeated each year for decades. It is well known that girls are more likely to be aborted than boys, so that abortion skews normal ratios of men to women.

Many, if not most, have no doubt grown “comfortable” with such numbers. Not a few are more likely to be concerned over the death of pets than over that of the aborted human child. Why is this? In one sense it is true that every aborted child is “unwilled,” not wanted at least to the degree that its already incipient life does not prevent some parent, doctor, or official from killing it, if the one responsible for it wills that it does not wish to deal with the child already present.

For a long while, in this matter, we did everything we could to lie to ourselves about what was being aborted. We had long supposedly scientific explanations about how human life was not there yet. But these days are over. No one can really claim that what is aborted is not a human being in its first stages. We have videos that simply show the unified sequence from conception.

Every human being who ever lived was once in the same condition. The argument, if it is an argument, now accepts that what is killed is human. “Rights talk” makes it possible for us to speak of lives that “should” not exist. The human race now claims authority to decide who lives and who dies. Some actual human beings are not “human” enough to live. To get rid of them has something “noble” about it, like saving the race from itself.
Yet I want to look at the aborted from another angle. We sometimes say of martyrs that they died for a noble cause. We do not recognize that “the aborted” represent a significant part of the human race, that part which is killed by our choice not to have them among us. But who are they? Both the aborted and those who manage to be born have the same ultimate origin.

Each human life begins in conception. The human soul does not cause itself to exist. The origin of each human life is ultimately in the Godhead. Each is an image of God intended for eternal life. This includes each aborted child no matter at what stage its demise was decreed by another not allowing him to continue to exist in this world.

But in that sense, it is too late. It already exists. The total number of human beings who have existed – perhaps some hundred billion thus far on this planet – includes the aborted. It also includes those who aborted them directly or indirectly.

Those who kill the aborted are generally not called to judgment in the courts of this world. But the world is created in ultimate justice. The aborted exist for eternal life, but also to identify who killed them. The aborted remain members of the human race with all the dead. Without being asked, they are killed. Their lives are not “nothing.”

On internet, please see: "ENDOWMENT for HUMAN DEVELOPMENT". By 8 weeks a baby is already determining right and left handedness. Pro-baby killers do not want people to see this. As others have said on internet read: "Worthiness to Receive Holy Communion, General Principles" by Cardinal Ratzinger - knowing that nothing is proportionate in the USA to the murder of approx ONE MILLION innocent babies each year. Each VOTE counts - volunteer to work for, and contribute to decent candidates so that we can reverse the culture of death not only in the White House, Senate and House, but also in State and local offices.

Thank you Father Schall for simply laying out the argument against abortion. In California abortion stats are not even collected, which makes our state even more uncaring. Who is aborting where are they occurring, and how many abortions? The Catholic Church should make aborted babies martyrs and maybe our brothers and sisters would wake up.

Hitler thought he had the authority to judge who lives and dies and exterminated any and all people he thought were less than human. Not just Jewish people, but Catholic, people with mental problems, people with mental retardation or physical handicaps, etc. The abortion industry is so blinded by love of money that it does not see it is following the example of Hitler. We sure have a lot of work to do and we need to be mindful of this when we step into the election box in November. God Love You.

lisag, 7:52 AM, Your sentiments are admirable, but not theologically correct. A Martyr is one who chooses of their own volition death rather than to denounce The Christ. We do not know what God may do for these little ones at the time of their murder, maybe he does offer them the crown of martyrdom, but we don't know that. God bless, yours in Their Hearts, Kenneth M. REGARDING BABIES AS MARTYRS "June 29, 2012 1:33 PM By Kenneth M. Fisher --- lisag, 7:52 AM, Your sentiments are admirable, but not theologically correct. A Martyr is one who chooses of their own volition death rather than to denounce The Christ." KENNETH, the non-liberal online catholic encyclopedia refers to the babies killed by king herod as MARTYRS, and they certainly had no choise: The Church venerates these children as martyrs (flores martyrum); they are the first buds of the Church killed by the frost of persecution; they died not only for Christ, but in his stead (St. Aug., "Sermo 10us de sanctis").

The infants, known as the Holy Innocents, have been claimed as the first Christian martyrs. The number of infants killed is not stated, with modern scholars disputing earlier accounts.[4] The historicity of the episode is disputed: it is "an open question that probably can never be definitively decided",[5] however according to Paul Maier "most recent biographers of Herod ... deny it entirely".[6]

k, you're all emotion, playing kids' games. A. You claim ownership of the Catholic inviolate Catholic lexicon. B. you disregard the point I made regarding Charles and Bl John Paul II's work, and come up with some really childish game of persona assignment. Work harder at understanding the words and how they can be construed logically. If you see no logic, then work harder until you do ... that is what it takes, k.

Kenneth, thank you for using the word "murder," for that is exactly what it is. I hate the word abortion, not merely for what it means, but for the fact that it fails to communicate fully what is in fact happening to this child. If the child were just a few weeks or months older and had been born, and if someone came after him or her with a knife with the intent of taking his or her life, we would not say that the child was aborted from life. The child would have been murdered, and all would agree. That child is not less alive for not having yet been moved by natural forces from within the mother's womb! The baby is alive and presumably well when an instrument of murder attacks and kills it, and thus "abortion" is a sanitized word for the heinous crime of nothing less than murder. How anyone can murder a baby is beyond me. Few of us can even bear the thought of having to slaughter a chicken for our dinners, let alone contemplate killing our own children or our neighbors' children. Those who do so after their children are born are almost always considered insane. Why are those who do so before they are born not called to answer in our human courts? Waiting for Judgment Day does not satisfy my human need for justice here and now; I want to see justice done on behalf of any child, born or unborn, who is murdered at all, let alone at the instigation of, and with the cooperation of, his or her parents. Is it okay to murder a child who is say, in the process of being born? Would it be murder if only the head were emerged? When is a child to be protected? I say from conception onward!! Otherwise it is murder, murder, murder, and nothing less than murder.

I hope that we don't get DE-sensitized as the liberals do and have no emotion at this sight, this murdered baby is now gone and never had a chance. I feel a deep sorrow. What a cruel society we live in! Shame on all who approve this barbaric murder of the unborn! This is truly righteous anger! To be angry at this unjust treatment of the unborn! The few of us who try so hard to end this, to stop this killing spree, we should never give up. The Church needs to be a strong voice for the unborn, one strong one, with backbone and with great conviction for the unborn!

Posted Saturday, June 30, 2012 1:59 PM By Abeca Christian
Maryanne Leonard I agree, then we should make those accountable for placing the innocent to this. It should be treated and charged as murder.

Posted Saturday, June 30, 2012 2:01 PM By Abeca Christian
I don't condone cruelty on animals at all but see how crooked this society is, those who abuse animals and get caught, may go to prison and be prosecuted to the best of the law, but those who murder an unborn child do not.

Maryanne Leonard, I don't always use the term "murder" when speaking of abortion, guess the Holy Spirit prompted on this one. But when debating the "pro-choice" crowd I always reply "the choice is the killing of an unborn child"! God bless, yours in Their Hearts, Kenneth M. Fisher

Abeca, me too; I've been shedding tears for 39 years over this ... Jesus took 39 strikes with the scourge by some accounts. Maybe next year will be better, or maybe Jesus took a multiple of 39 hits with the scourage, which means no change in this respect.

"Kenneth M. Fisher----max, For one who writes so much on a Catholic blog, yes you should know!" ah, KENNETH, your exclamation points are such a gift. as i remember it, you said babies can't be martyrs, and i pointed out that the church considers the holy innocents to be martyrs, and then you got all huffy. why all the rage? we're talking about something important here (abortion) and you're worried about your statement of june 29 being can be wrong and still loved.

whether the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY considers these murdered babies to be 'martyrs' or not, we cannot know; but i firmly believe HE loves them and takes them to his heart. i've served as a counselor for PROJECT RACHEL and even encourage women who've had an abortion to name her baby, to ask for the baby's forgiveness, to ask the baby to pray for her...and never have i pretended it's not serious. the moms know it. the dads know it. that's why they come to us. in repentence.

max, My big brother was aborted by my mother, fortunately she only succeeded with my brother and not my big sister. We named him Michael. God bless, yours in Their Hearts, Kenneth M. Fisher

I was always told that these babies actually go some where else due to not being baptized....therefore no they are not considered martyrs.

Abeca, That somewhere else is "Limbo" and it is not a Dogma of the Faith. I believe in Limbo because of Reason. Even Limbo will be no more after the "End of Time", and no innocent persons will enter Hell, so what does that leave? God bless, yours in Their Hearts, Kenneth M. Fisher

Posted Tuesday, July 03, 2012 10:53 PM By Abeca Christian
Mr. Fisher oh yes I heard of that. I don't know what to think about it but I will just trust in the Lord almighty. Some things will just remain a mystery and us being human will just have to trust in our Lord. He is good.
